Introduction of BIM enabled EPC assessments – Online course

Produced in multinational BIMEET-project funded by the EU. For more information, visit www.bimeet.eu.

Course syllabus

Duration1 h
FormatTeacher-free, Self-paced, Non-stop online course. Free of charge.
PrerequisitesNo prerequisites. Learner benefits from basic knowledge of Building Information Modeling, Energy Performance Certificates and energy analysis of buildings.
Target groupsClients & Client advisers: Client is the most important stakeholder to enable energy efficient building. Course helps understand the needed resources and know-how to utilize BIM and EPC to the full potential to benefit a building project.
Architectural design roles: Architect BIM is biggest source of EPC data. It is important to know how BIM should be built so it benefits EPC calculations. Architects impact on buildings energy performance is most comprehensive. Understanding the benefits of EPC in energy efficient design is important.
Building services design roles: EPC assessment is often carried out by an energy expert or HVAC engineer. Course helps understanding how EPC can be done faster and accurately with the help of BIM.
Others: An energy efficient building is based of integrated effort, co-operation and specialized knowledge of multiple stakeholders. Understanding of BIM and EPC is hence important to anyone working in the construction sector.
Course overviewAssessing EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) is mandatory for most buildings in the EU. EPC has the potential to direct construction projects towards sustainable solutions. The traditional way of generating EPC manually with a variety of different information sources can be time consuming. Utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) is gaining popularity in building projects. It has the potential to excessively enhance different processes of a building during its life-cycle, including the EPC-assessments. Each country in the EU has their own approach to EPC and BIM-procedures. In this course a general perspective of the topic is introduced. A closer look is also taken into a selection of different country perspectives (Finland, Luxembourg, United Kingdom). Course consists of slideshows, lecture-videos, review-questions, tutorials, extra-materials and final exam. Representing different use cases helps the learner to understand the benefits and challenges of current BIM and EPC -related tools and procedures.
Course objectivesLearner understands the benefits and importance of BIM in enhanced and accurate EPC assessments. (S)he also learns what needs to be considered in the information modeling to unleash its potential as the data source for the analysis. (S)he also learns why developing the modeling and assessment skills are important for sustainable buildings building projects.
Learning objectivesAfter the course learner is able to:
1) Point out legislation and regulations related to EPC (Energy Performance Certificates).
2) List and explain core concepts of EPC in the EU.
3) Explain added value of BIM for EPC assessment.
4) List initial data needed for EPC assessment.
5) Give examples how to extract initial data for EPC from BIM.
6) Give examples of specific information modeling requirements and outputs to enhance EPC assessment.
7) Summarize the process of EPC calculation.
8) Discuss about potentials and uses of different available BIM-compatible EPC-tools.
9) Discuss about the future developments of EPC.
Assignments overviewVoluntary quiz after each module, final exam at the end of the course based on previous questions. All feedback automated.
